Overview
The Directorate of Environmental Compliance ensures that all railway development is planned and carried out in line with national environmental regulations and international sustainability standards, while promoting climate resilience and responsible infrastructure development. Working alongside the Environment Protection Agency, the Directorate oversees screening, environmental and social impact assessment, permitting, monitoring, and the enforcement of environmental and social management plans across the national railway network.
Key Functions
- Establish and operate the Environmental Compliance Unit and its legal and policy frameworks.
- Integrate environmental considerations into feasibility studies and project design for the National Railway Masterplan.
- Lead the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process and secure regulatory approvals and permits.
- Run an environmental monitoring system for air, water, noise, and soil, supported by a GIS environmental database.
- Enforce contractor compliance with approved Environmental and Social Management Plans during construction.
- Embed climate resilience, ESG principles, and carbon-reduction strategies, including cleaner traction energy, in railway development.
- Support the prevention of rail-source pollution and the response to environmental accidents.
